Haarlem is a historic city in the Dutch province of North Holland, located on the Spaarne River between Amsterdam and the North Sea coast. Its compact center contains canals, narrow streets, brick merchant houses, courtyards, and public squares, with the Grote Markt forming the traditional heart of the city. The Grote or St.-Bavokerk dominates the square with its tall tower and monumental organ. Haarlem is also known for its museums, independent shops, and long association with painting, printing, brewing, and the cultivation of flowers in the surrounding countryside.

Haarlem has a strong cultural identity shaped by trade, religion, art, and civic life. The Frans Hals Museum holds an important collection of Dutch Golden Age paintings, including works by Frans Hals, who lived and worked in the city. The Teylers Museum, located beside the Spaarne, combines art, science, natural history, and historic scientific instruments. The Hofjes, small enclosed courtyards surrounded by almshouses, are another distinctive feature of Haarlem’s urban heritage. Several remain tucked behind gates and doorways throughout the old center, providing a glimpse of traditional forms of charitable housing.

The Spaarne River is central to Haarlem’s landscape, with former warehouses, bridges, and historic buildings lining sections of its banks. The Molen de Adriaan, a windmill beside the water, is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks and recalls the importance of wind power to local industry. Haarlem is also closely associated with the nearby bulb-growing region, particularly the fields around the Bollenstreek. South of the city, the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen and Zuid-Kennemerland National Park protect coastal dunes, forests, lakes, and wildlife, while the beaches of Bloemendaal aan Zee and Zandvoort are easily reached from Haarlem.

Haarlem’s food culture reflects both Dutch traditions and its history as a brewing center. Jopen beer is closely associated with the city, and the former church known as the Jopenkerk now serves as a brewery and restaurant. Local bakeries and markets offer Dutch cheeses, herring, bread, pastries, and other regional foods. The city is also known for its connection to the cultivation and trade of tulips and other bulbs, which shaped the surrounding economy and landscape. Another distinctive local product is Haarlemse Hout, a traditional type of chocolate associated with the city’s confectionery tradition and named after the nearby Haarlemmerhout woodland.

Amsterdam
Amsterdam
Amsterdam, the 17th century capital of Holland, is often called the "Venice of the North" due to its numerous, boat-navigable canals. Truly rich in history, the oldest part of this populous, multicultural city is Sloten, which dates all the way back to the 9th century.

Rotterdam
Rotterdam
If you find yourself in Rotterdam, there's a strong chance you've arrived by water. This popular port city (the second largest in the Netherlands) has gone through an architectural renaissance since World War II, with daring, innovative structures dotting the city (cube houses!) and defining its skyline. Café culture is on the rise here, so grab yourself a table and a cup.
