Nuku Hiva is the largest of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia, a place where scale and isolation shape both history and daily life. Long before European contact, the island supported complex Marquesan societies known for stone architecture, tattoo traditions, and ceremonial sites, many of which remain scattered across its valleys. Later encounters with explorers and missionaries altered the population and landscape, but the island’s cultural identity remains strongly Marquesan.

The terrain is steep and dramatic, defined by high volcanic ridges, deep valleys, and sheer cliffs that drop into the Pacific. Unlike many Polynesian islands, Nuku Hiva has few coral reefs, and the coastline feels raw and exposed. Inland, waterfalls, grazing lands, and archaeological remains sit within a landscape that feels expansive and lightly settled.
