Cachi is a small mountain town in Argentina’s Salta Province, set in the northern Calchaquí Valleys at more than 2,000 meters above sea level. Its historic center has cobbled streets, raised sidewalks, adobe buildings, and a central square surrounded by traditional architecture. The town sits beneath the peaks of the Nevado de Cachi and among stands of tall cardon cacti, creating a distinctive highland landscape. Cachi is also an important stopping point on the route from Salta through the Cuesta del Obispo and Los Cardones National Park toward the Calchaquí Valleys.

Cachi has deep connections to the Indigenous communities that inhabited the Calchaquí Valley before Spanish settlement, particularly the Diaguita-Calchaquí people. The town's cultural identity remains visible in traditional agriculture, weaving, local festivals, and regional crafts. The Church of San José stands beside the main square and is recognized as a National Historic Monument, while the Pío Pablo Díaz Archaeological Museum preserves objects associated with the pre-Hispanic cultures of the region. The town's annual celebrations include festivities dedicated to San José, bringing together religious ceremonies, traditional music, dancing, and local communities.

The landscape around Cachi offers access to highland mountains, cactus forests, valleys, and archaeological sites. Los Cardones National Park protects more than 64,000 hectares of Andean and dryland ecosystems, including extensive stands of cardon cactus. The scenic Cuesta del Obispo climbs through the mountains toward Piedra del Molino before reaching the park and the Calchaquí Valley. Nearby archaeological sites include La Paya, where pre-Columbian remains provide evidence of earlier settlement. The Nevado de Cachi rises to 6,380 meters and is the highest mountain in the Calchaquí Valleys, attracting mountaineers and providing a dramatic backdrop to the town.

Cachi's food reflects the agricultural traditions of the high valleys, with corn, squash, quinoa, potatoes, and locally produced meats appearing in regional dishes. Humitas, tamales, locro, and Salta-style empanadas are among the foods commonly served in local restaurants. The Calchaquí Valley is also known for its high-altitude wines, while Cachi and surrounding communities produce paprika, or pimentón, that has a protected Denomination of Origin. Other regional products include cayote preserves and traditional sweets. Local weaving and textile work remain important crafts, with handmade goods providing another connection between the town's rural economy and its cultural heritage.
