Graaff-Reinet is a historic town in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, set within a broad bend of the Sundays River in the Great Karoo. It is surrounded by the landscapes of Camdeboo National Park and is known for its collection of well-preserved historic buildings. More than 200 heritage structures are found across the town, many built in distinctive Cape Dutch, Victorian, and Karoo architectural styles. Its location gives Graaff-Reinet a clear connection to the semi-arid Karoo, where dry plains, rocky hills, and hardy vegetation form the setting around the town.

The town’s cultural history is reflected in its museums, churches, old homes, and public buildings. Reinet House, a former parsonage, is now a museum displaying furniture, household objects, and collections associated with local life. The Drostdy Hotel and nearby historic buildings form part of the town’s architectural heritage, while the Dutch Reformed Church stands prominently in the centre. Graaff-Reinet also has connections to the broader history of the Eastern Cape, including the experiences of Indigenous communities, settlers, farmers, and people affected by colonial and later political developments.

Camdeboo National Park virtually surrounds Graaff-Reinet and provides access to some of the region’s most distinctive landscapes. The Valley of Desolation is its best-known attraction, where tall dolerite columns rise above the Great Karoo plains from viewpoints along the escarpment. The park also contains dry valleys, rocky hills, game-viewing areas, and Karoo vegetation, with species such as mountain zebra, kudu, springbok, and buffalo. Within the town itself, the Karoo Nature Reserve surroundings and historic streets provide opportunities to explore the area without leaving the urban centre.

Food in Graaff-Reinet reflects the farming traditions of the Karoo, where lamb and mutton are important local products. Karoo lamb is commonly prepared as chops, roast, or other hearty dishes, while traditional farm-style cooking includes fresh bread, preserves, vegetables, and locally produced meats. Angora goats and Merino sheep are also significant to the surrounding agricultural economy, with mohair and wool forming notable regional products. A distinctive feature of Graaff-Reinet is its unusual setting: it is widely described as the only South African town completely surrounded by a national park, linking its historic streets directly with the Karoo landscape.
